The challenge
Scaling up a team of the size and expertise required to meet IG’s requirements would be a significant undertaking, calling for in-depth knowledge of the talent market and a deep understanding of the type of professionals who would best fill the required roles.
Online trading is a high speed, highly regulated industry, and IG’s products are complex and require a deep understanding in order to market effectively.
The solution: Yellowcat’s strategy
Consulting with IG on their goals, we knew that to create such a large team in such a short space of time would be best suited to a top-down model which emphasised the hiring of heads of department first.
The advantage of this approach is that it would enable us to work closely with those heads of department, once placed, to staff up their teams, co-working on what their team make up should be.
The talents
The obvious choice of talent for the industry IG operate in would be those with pre-existing financial services or corporate experience.
But we knew that this wouldn’t lead to the desired result in terms of the creative output IG would need.
For the bold requirements IG had to shake things up, individuals with creative industry experience would be in many cases more suitable, provided that they had the aptitude and compatibility to adapt and learn the technicalities and culture of online trading.
The outcome
A large number of the 100 placements we made are progressing within the business some years later. Some went on to receive external awards which is a serious testament to the quality of the team built, the working culture IG provides, and the suitability of the candidates we were able to provide.
